Basic Field Camera Production (3 sessions)

Learn basic shooting, audio recording, and production skills to create
 quality programs to air on Marin TV. This core class offers hands-on training with 
Sony X70 camcorders, wired and wireless hand-held and lavalier microphones, tripods, and monopods. Equipment safety and check-out/check-in procedures will also be covered.

Successful completion of this class will certify Marin residents to
 check out equipment for 48-96 hours at a time, up to four times a month 
per video project. You must attend all three sessions to become
 certified.

Three-Point Lighting

Get familiar with the basic principles of three-point lighting and how to achieve greater stylistic control when shooting in the field. With CMCM's user-friendly ikan iLED312-v2 kits, you'll learn how to enhance shooting conditions when few or no lights are available. With the help of frosts, gels, reflectors, and flags, you'll also get to experiment creating different moods. Want to expand your lighting repertoire? Get your hands on other types of lights including Lowel Omni 500s, Lowel Pro-lights, and a Photoflex Starlite softbox.

Multi-Camera Field Production

Learn how to use the Blackmagic ATEM Switcher to shoot multi-camera coverage of an on-location event.  This hands-on workshop will include an overview of the Sony X-70 cameras, set-up of equipment, crew communications, and troubleshooting tips. Instruction will be two-fold, 1) technical considerations for video and audio set-ups and situations 2) the operational responsibilities of the director, from basic cues and commands to camera operators, and common techniques in live-edit switching.

This is a very technical workshop. Users should be knowledgeable on the basic aspects of audio and video cabling and troubleshooting. Successful completion of this course will certify you to check out CMCM’s Sony Blackmagic ATEM Switcher for 48-72 hours at a time per event. 

Course Requirements: Certification in Basic Field Camera Production, Basic Studio Production, and Introduction to Final Cut Pro X Editing.

Sessions: 2 (with a third session -- hands-on and in the field -- to be mutually arranged by student/s and instructor.

Pre-Production (1 session)

The first stage of video production is the planning phase, and it is easily the most important. Pre-production is where you take the steps to make sure that you have the right research, equipment, crew, locations, schedule, and shot list of the content you must capture.

This course will help you lay out a clear and simple plan of action that you will absolutely depend on when you set out into the field.

Facility & Equipment

CMCM has a large inventory of production equipment available to members, including the Marin TV studio, Sony X70 field cameras, a Blackmagic multi-camera field shoot sytem, Final Cut Pro X video editing stations, and a private editing suite.

Production Studio
The Marin TV studio is a robotic four-camera remote studio with low-energy fluorescent lighting and a double curtain cyc (black/gray/green screen). Camera inputs, computer, and Blueray, sources are available for the control room's Blackmagic switcher. Producers can record programming straight to SSD cards. Audio is mixed via a 24-channel Yamaha mixer. Basic CG for titles is available via a Compix Character Generator system. Other features include a teleprompter, a phone hybrid for taking live on-air calls, a talent IFB, and COM system for a floor director. Depending on the complexity of the production, the entire control room operation can be managed by a two-to-four person crew.

Orientation

Want to create videos to air on Marin TV? Attending a free CMCM Orientation is the first step. If you choose to become a member, you can take our low-cost video production workshops and receive the necessary certifications for using CMCM equipment and facilities for free. Orientations are open to all Marin County residents and organizations and held at 819 A Street in San Rafael monthly, via Zoom. Stay tuned to this website for updates.

PLEASE NOTE: Orientations will be held virtually. All registrants will receive a Zoom "invitation link" the day before the session.
