Silenced Majority

Amy Goodman stopped off in Palo Alto on her 100-city tour leading up to the 2012 Election Day. Goodman discusses her latest book, The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance, and Hope, at the First Presbyterian Church.

The event was a benefit for Democracy Now! and Peninsula Peace and Justice Center. Goodman was joined by Denis Moynihan, co-author of their new book. Denis has been a Democracy Now! team member since 2001 and co-writes Amy's weekly newspaper column.

Though he has a full-time position as a forklift operator, dock worker Dennis Ohm doesn’t earn enough to support his family. Anke Betram is a self-employed midwife, but has a second job at a health farm.

They are both among the growing number of Germans who work full-time but need a second job to make ends meet. Many of them now work as much as 60 to 70 hours a week. These cases will be familiar to many Americans suffering the same fate: not enough pay to survive.

First, an interview with Don Carney, the director of Marin Youth Court which brings an innovative approach to Marin’s teenagers. The youth play DA, defense lawyer, and juror and the sentences are binding. The sentences focus on restorative justice and not on punishment. Kelly O’Mara, a host for Seriously Now, conducts the interview.

A series of short beautiful documentaries that tell the stories of unique individuals throughout the Golden State. The films are produced, directed, and shot by Drea Cooper & Zackary Canepari.

The first short, Cannonball, is about skateboarders riding the abandoned and empty pools of Fresno, a city hit hard by the financial debt crisis resulting in numerous foreclosed homes. This is followed by a portrait of Hollywood Superman impersonator, Christopher Dennis, in the short Superman.

Democracy Now! "Expanding the Debate"

Watch Democracy Now's "Expanding the Debate" program held at the Osher Jewish Community Center, Tuesday October 16th, crewed by CMCM staff and members. The special featured Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein and Justice Party nominee Rocky Anderson responding to the same questions posed to President Obama and Mitt Romney in the final debate of the campaign. In addition, there was a pre-debate segment included Ai-jen Poo of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, University of San Francisco Professor Stephen Zunes, and Norman Solomon, co-founder of RootsAction.org.
