Braceros

The Bracero program from 1942 through 1964 allowed Mexican nationals to take temporary agricultural work in the United States. Over the program’s 22-year life, more than 4.5 million Mexican nationals were legally contracted for work in the US (some individuals returned several times on different contracts). The is the story of the Braceros of Tlaxcalo, Mexico and their fight for their unpaid wages.

Eye of the Storm

Congratulations to local filmmaker Kramer Herzog for winning the CreaTiVe Excellence Award for Eye of the Storm.

On the night of December 13, 2005, San Quentin Village was hit by a media storm generated by the coming execution of Crips co-founder Tookie Williams. The film's director, Kramer Herzog, is a resident of the village, and in return for the use of his property, the FOX National News crew granted Herzog permission to film and interact with them over the course of the 24 hours leading up to the midnight execution.

Danish social entrepreneur Thorkil Sonne set up an IT company in 2004 called "Specialisterne" that employs people with autism. These people's difficulties are often accompanied by unique talents, such as razor-sharp memories, great powers of concentration, precision and an eye for detail.

Author Howard Zinn is honored at the NY Society for Ethical Culture, where actors, activists and authors read excerpts from his book, Voices of a People's History of the United States.
